I think I recall reading an article about a passenger landing a passenger
jet in one of my aviation magazines, but don't quote me on that. It's
certainly not as common as in the movies. Even with my basic pilot cert I
don't know if I would be able to do it.

But as for small planes, it happens. It's unfortunately frequent enough that
there are even one-day training progams for spouses and family of pilots of
small planes to just familiarize them with the cockpit so that if they're
ever in that situation they aren't entirely clueless and hopefully they can
at least know how to use the radio (one of the more complicated parts, IMO).
