The magnets will let loose and the metal filings that look like smoke
will go out and grab people and try to pull them in the hole.
That's why Locke almost got pulled down, Desmond fell asleep and the
alarm woke him. Do the magnets mess up your head or do the control a
deadly something.
Why does Desmond keep saying, "See you in another life"?
Too many strange things to figure out make it very entertaining.
