Most Southern states by your definition don't have gators.
Texas is considered the South and if it weren't for the sign saying,
"Welcome to New Mexico" I never would have known I left. I think they
have scorpions also :)
I consider anything that touches the Gulf of Mexico or Mexico the
south. California is mostly in the South but part in the North.
I guess most people still use the old Mason Dixon line. If you look at
the history you'll see the Southern half of NM seceded from the Union
and joined the Confederacy.
