This is all quibbling... The south encompasses a large area which differs in itself from state to state.
However, the current definition of the south includes Texas but not NM. It is true that West Texas and NM share much more in common than say West Texas and SC. However, thinking of the South typically means hot, humid climates, people that speak with a definite drawl, "rednecks", a passion for guns and fishing poles, and a large African-American population due to the massive quantity of slaves in the areas in the 1800s. Of course you can these things in many different parts of the nation, but the South is as much a state of being as it is a locale. I wouldn't necessarily even call some parts of Texas southern as much as I would say it's the "Old West", due to cultural differences between that part of the state and other regions that are closer to Georgia and Mississippi. In any case, NM is not considered the "South" if you're grouping it in with states such as SC, FL or MS on a non-geographic basic.
