I don't recall ever getting accused of lying like that, except in
Kindergarten by a substitute. She told me I couldn't read, and told me
to demonstrate. So I started reading posters on the wall. She then
told me "You just memorized what the words look like!" By then I was
terrified, but remember thinking, "How do you do it?"

My best friend and I had similar experiences to this. We were both "diagnosed"
as bad readers in the third grade, because we were bad spellers. His diagnosis
was turned over immediately after his mother marched into the principles office
and had my friend read passages from the bible for the principle. I was
actually sent into a remedial reading program, which I kind of like really nice
teacher. But I was also kicked out when during the first parent teacher
conference the teacher learned I was reading an un-illustrated copy of "Black
Beauty". I then went on to read "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings"
trilogy.

The epilog to this story is that four years later in a seventh grade literature
class assignment where I was supposed to pick a book to read, the teacher was
reluctant to let me read the Tolkien books, because they where too advanced. I
was able to convincer her to let me try. Didn't let on it was my third reading
of the books.
