There are also different thicknesses of tarps.  The blue Wal-Mart-level
tarps are mainly for ground cover when camping or for covering your boat
in the garage.

Some places like Home Depot may have heavier tarps that would hold up
better.  They are still made of woven plastic strands, but are quite a
bit stronger.

Another key is to have a shock absorber and not tie the tarp tightly
using non-elastic bindings.  If you use something that will stretch, it
will last a bit longer in the winds since it allows the tarp to give.

As far as the roof, if I had my way, and the money, I would replace my
asphalt shingles with a nice tin roof.  I love the sound it makes when
it rains.

Perhaps, but it will last for a while in the mean time.  After the
hurricanes here in Florida you see nothing but blue tarps everything for
weeks while people are waiting for insurance or whatever.
