As I understand it the nominal distance for passive tags (tags without power
sources) is around 10 feet or so at most.  Passive tags can also store only
minimal information.  Passive tags can be itty-bitty - small enough for
sub-dermal installation - and don't need maintenance.

Active tags (tags with power sources) can store more information and a range
commensurate with their antennas and power sources; but most can be read
within, say 100 feet.  Active tags are also much (much) more expensive to
create and maintain however so they are pretty rare.  They are also larger
(of course).
