It's just different strokes and all that. I basically like all genres
except for rap, opera, and metal. But I know enough to say that it's
just that those particular genres aren't my taste. I wouldn't pass
judgement and say that any or all of them suck (or any other
dergoatory comment).

Just like our convo about baseball. I'd never say "baseball sucks" or
anything to that effect. Other people enjoy it and that's great that
they do. But for me, it just ain't my cuppa :)

FWIW, when i was in my early to mid 20's, and someone asked me what
kind of music I liked, I'd say anything except rap, opera, metal, and
country.

Then I got a job waiting tables at a country bar. I was in college, I
needed a job. It was close to school. I remember the first few days
there, just trying to tune the godawful music (my preconceived notion)
out of my head. I'd see other waiters getting into it and just shake
my head at the notion that they could actually like this stuff.

Well, after some time, inevitably, things just started to penetrate
the mental block. I'd hear a song and say, "oh yeah...they played
this one the other day...it doesn't completely suck." little by
little, i found myself saying that more and more.

In time I came to realize that, while yes...there are a huge number of
country songs that follow the theme of "my wife left me and took my
pickup truck and ran over my dog Blue on the way out of the driveway
so i'm sitting here drinking on my front porch", there's a lot that
are just about love. That are about real things that we've all
encountered and can relate to. Love. Parenthood. Being a father.
Being a son. Falling in love. Falling out of love. Real stuff.

(I defy any father of a girl to listen to Gary Allen's "Tough Little
Boys" and not appreciate it)

But it still comes down to different strokes. People can listen to
rap or hip-hop and find those same messages...those same things that
apply to them. It's all about what works for you.
