WTOP is a DC area radio station. They have a large federal employee
audience. I listen mainly to the traffic reports myself.

As for the question, unfortunately the system does not really allow
for significant changes that way. The problem also lies in how people
are chosen to run in elections. Caucuses and primaries are the most
common way to select candidates. Those with special interests, the
very committed, True Believers, and party stalwarts are far more
likely to participate in the selection process. Most moderates don't.
That sets up a wonderful opportunity for special groups to hijack the
selection process, and later the actual election to advance their
cause. The solution may be to figure out a way to avoid that from
happening. Perhaps by adding a provision in the ballots, called None
of the Above. If a certain percentage of voters choose that option is
chosen, the election must be redone with new candidates.

another possibility it to remove the influence of money from the
electoral process. That way special interests cannot buy their
candidate's office.
