*All* of my mailing lists go to my GMail account.  I had to do this so
I could segment my time and not get distracted with constant new email
notifications.

The way I handle it is to have a seperate label for each list that I'm
on and then have filters for each list to apply the label and remove
the message from the inbox.  What this accomplishes is a clean inbox
with labels for each group showing me how many messages are waiting. 
In addition if someone sends me an email directly to my gmail account
that doesn't match the filters I see it in my inbox.

An added side-benifit is that I can use gmail to search archives.
