It was the same price for us either way, and we were very happy that we started in a smaller city - not nearly the scary traffic as Dublin.
By the way, we got a great deal when we went - airfare, car rental, bed and breakfast for 7 nights for 2 = $600. This was shortly after 9/11, so prices were dirt cheap to travel. I've mentioned it before, but it bears repeating - get the car insurance for the rental. Those roads are brutal narrow.
