We're considering moving (from the Boston area). My company has offices in
Moosic (outside of Scranton).

Any comments on the area? Schools (aside from Dover how are they with
science curricula)? Services (broadband, cable, phone, etc)?

The move isn't something we're looking forward too unfortunately. We just
can't afford to buy a house here although we LOVE the area dearly. But I
make $90,000/year and I can't come close to buying a house in Boston Metro
(isn't that just plain sick?) By most standards I'm doing very well but
we're still in a small apartment with no storage, no laundry and no equity.

(Houses in my neighborhood, West Somerville, are running over $600,000 now.)

If I move I can keep my current salary which is great. It would net us a
very nice house in the Moosic/Scranton area. Unfortunately we don't have
much saved for a down payment but I think we can scrape enough together in
time.

I will have to give up telecommuting (a major drag for me), but my family
WILL get a house out of the deal. I've always felt guilty that I've never
given the kids those things that I had growing up: a backyard, a swing set,
a basement or attic to build giant Lego creations, etc. Where we are my
kids can't even go outside unless we go with them.

My (7 year-old) son goes into tears at the mere mention of moving... but I
think he'll get over it. And we wouldn't be doing it until the summer in
any case (so he'll be able to finish out the school year at least).

It really sucks that my choices are move the whole family several hundred
miles or continue paying god-awfully high rent and never own my own home.

Ah well... I guess I shouldn't complain. I'm sure there are a lot of people
that would love to have my problems. ;^)
