I'm not sure they are insane, just doing things for reasons not yet explained. When they were walking up to the mountain for radio signal, Goodwin corrected Ana Lucia when she wondered aloud why the others were trying to hurt them. Goodwin seems to imply that they have some other motivation. He goes on to imply that the first attack was to eliminate the strong ones, and that the second one was to get a list of the "good people". > They want the "good" people, and the children. It also seemed smaller in size, and what was up with the contents of that trunk? A glass eye (perhaps from the black rock pirates?), a bible, and a radio? Perhaps there are different stations with different purposes, but why? To balance each other out? Is one a yin for the other's yang? Are there multiple stations on the island all there to balance each other out? Some grand experiment of good vs evil? There is also another potential force for faith joining the show in the faith vs science conflict between Locke and Jack. Eko mentions at the start of the episode that he will pray for both Bernard's wife, and for rescue planes. Eko is also the one to hold the Bible thoughtfully when it's retrieved from the trunk.
