Personally the very first thing I'd do is make sure the investigator is
real. Meet him at his office and make sure he works at an official building
(don't just meet him in the lobby and then leave - make sure he works
there), get a lawyer to review documents and so forth.

Ask what office he works for, his badge number, the name of his supervisor
and so forth. If it is a scam such questions might scare them away
immediately.

Be cooperative - he's probably on the level - but don't offer more than you
have to.

A really old con is to pretend to be a police officer and accuse somebody of
something distasteful. It's often done at hotels: a pretty young girl will
knock on the door and ask to use your phone, moments later an "officer" will
barge in claiming to be from vice and accuse you of being with an underage
prostitute.

They'll both go away, eventually, and not "report this to your wife and
family" if you pay the sizable fine there and then.

In your case I could easily see a scam set up as you describe. You get a
call from an official-sounding individual who accuses you of an awful crime.
Eventually he comes to your home, maybe he even starts to sympathize. So he
tells you that all he has to do is takes your computer hardware to office
for a few days: if they find nothing incriminating then you're clear.

In other words, if this is a con, for a few phone calls and a visit he gets
to walk away with perhaps several thousand dollars of computer equipment
(and perhaps a good identity to steal). Nobody wants to be labeled a
pedophile or be associated with the investigation and will probably
cooperate overly.

I wouldn't assume that this is the case... but it is a possibility depending
the way things go.

The simple answer is using VOIP, but it might be a spoofed IP as well
depending on the specifics.
