Dude.  Do you ever drive in traffic?  There is no such thing as a
"safe distance".  If you tried to leave a safe distance somebody will
just fill in the gap (which is what I do so I don't have to drive
behind the fat asses).

The problem is the SUV driver is probably on the phone or eating and
realizes it's time to stop.  He slams on the brakes but, because the
guy behind him can't see the brake lights in front of the SUV, his
only warning is the SUV.  Crunch!

Happens every day.  Look at any camera on any city highway.  You'll
see an SUV with bashed up tail and a small car with a bashed up front
end.
