My mom has a Nissan Pathfinder and they've done a great job at faking
power: they've tweaked the torque converter, and power curve peaks
quickly. If you only pay attention to straight line 0-40mph, then,
yeah, it's not bad.

If you prefer a broad power curve and value cornering, however, then
an SUV is downright scary. I'd agree with you if you're talking
about, say, a BMW X5 with the 4.4 or 4.8 V8. But I'd still take an M3
for the same price.

I'll put it this way: if I've got $35k to spend on a vehicle I'd much
rather have, say, a subie WRX STi that has 300+ hp and AWD over an SUV
that may or may not roll over on a freeway on ramp (<- unnecessary
jib).

Here's my SUV purchase criteria:

1.) Have kids, need the room.
2.) Building a house, need the room.
3.) Tow stuff, need the pulling torque.
4.) Any combination of the above.

I don't have kids or a boat and I'm not building anything so I'm gonna
burn it up while I can!
