Yes, however, AUTH_USER is an OS or HTTPD level variable, it must be set via some other function.
It is my very vague understanding that it can be set with other functions that usually require the user to enter a username and password at a challenge from the site. But to have it auto-populated with the credentials the user logged onto the system with can be done with the "Windows integrated security" option of IIS servers connecting to MS windows clients generally using MS browsers.
