Learn the Application.CFC (not .CFM) framework. It's a bit
more-flexible.

Learn CFCs, in general. You don't need to start with a fully-blown
object-oriented site, but you can leverage some of the benefits of CFCs
from the beginning.

Look at CFDOCUMENT.

Others may say CFFORM is worthy of a look. I don't use CFFORM yet, so I
can't comment much on that.

Others may also say look into a framework. I have looked into "public"
frameworks, but have not had the chance to really dig into how they
work. Our sites are not so large that a framework would save us that
much time and effort at this point.

Good luck!

Subject: Converting my code from CF 5 to CF MX

I have been looking at my code and I have strictly been writing CF 5
code, down to CFSCRIPT functions. I need to start leveraging CF MX
strengths in my code, but I'm behind the eightball here. What should I
learn and implement first to upgrade my skills and my code?

On a side note, I have the opportunity to convert our Intranet from
ASP/ASP.net to ColdFusion 7.0 Standard. I think this would be an
excellent chance to try out any suggestions.
