One might argue that the 3 companies do not mimic the business world, 
which is comprised of significantly more than 3 companies.  Politics 
(Cliques / enemies / friends / etc.. ) exist in any grouping of people.

  I wouldn't want to work for a company that used this type of approach to 
projects, although it doesn't surprise me that some people work effectively 
in this environment.   I've heard rumors that Microsoft approaches 
development a similar way.  They take two teams and they each build the 
same feature; and the better implementation gets in the product.
