Of course there are really two broad problems here... your argument only
covers one.

If oil becomes scarce prices will go up and that would annoy us. True.

However the other argument revolves around the ramification of burning
fossil fuels (yes... fossil fuels, there's no respected science that says
oil is a renewable resource... and hell, even if it did renew itself it
definitely doesn't do so on a scale that will actually help us).

Whether or not you subscribe to man-made climate change it's clear that oil
consumption has pollutive effects. And if you do feel convinced of man-made
climate change then burning oil (especially burning it as we do in millions
and millions of small engines) is a big part of the problem.

But to return to the point it doesn't seem like you've got much of a chance
there. People that think gas-guzzlers are bad aren't going to change their
minds just because you say something. You deal with people like that by
either accepting an impasse, giving up the vehicle or giving up the friend.

Personally I feel that even if oil were renewable (which I don't believe it
is) there's no reason to waste it unnecessarily. People, in general, should
learn to consume to the level of their need and the simple fact is that most
SUVs aren't needed by their owners.
