Back in 1980, I was in the Air Force and stationed in lonely and desolate
northern Maine
(Loring AFB).

The rec center had an isolation booth with two reel-to-reel tape recorders
in it. I would spend hours over their with my guitars trying to figure out
how to bounce sound from one machine to the other so I could build
multi-track recordings of myself. It proved to be an impossible task given
the limitations of the machines, my knowledge and my talent. The only song I
really knew all of the way through was "Peggy Sue." So I tried over and over
to record that as a multi-part song.

Not until tonight have I had the ability to try mult-tracking again.

For Christmas, my parents gave me a Tascam MF-P01 Portastudio -- a little
four-track analog recorder.

The first thing I did was record myself doing some Buddy Holly. Below is a
link to my version of "Not Fade Away."

It's not -- I don't want to mislead you -- a great performance. I think I
did OK with the guitar and lead vocals, but my voice isn't well suited to
the background vocals and I had to make several takes on the backgrounds
before just deciding to stick with what I finally stuck with. Also, there's
some line noise between my stereo and my computer, so the mix down isn't as
clean I would like.

But, what the hell, here it is: http://www.hbo3.com/notfade.mp3.
