That is an idiom more than anything. In conversation it isn't really
wrong, as it gets the point across, but in formal speaking or writing
shouldn't be used.

I know I've used a lot several times, both speaking and writing, and I
always try to correct my self. However it is a part of conversational US
English now. But it still annoys me.
