It's the whole humans-overcoming-terrible-odds story.

The 1980 hockey team was such an underdog team, and the story behind
them so inspiring, that the general public knows about it and still
discusses it. They just made a movie about it, and here in hockey
country the players and the coach (who just died) are legend. The
story, of which the team and the sport are part, is inspirational and
has become art.

The discussion of sports doesn't make it art, just entertainment
(Dude, how'd you get past the Halo level?). Lots of people discuss
all kinds of entertainment. The thing that makes it art IMO is:

1.) It's ability to evoke a range of emotions that are common to most,
if not all, humans. That is, a microcosm of the human condition.

2.) It's inspirational qualities (due to #1).

3.) It's lasting quality (Pride and Prejudice was just re-made. Again.)

Few people outside of sports nuts couldn't tell you who played in last
year's Superbowl, much less 10 years ago. And if they could, they
likely wouldn't be moved by the game nor would it inspire much even if
we understood all of the events surrounding the game.

The same is not true of other sports events or teams. Maybe the 1984?
Chicago Bears would qualify in a smaller way. (Who doesn't smile at
the Superbowl Shuffle?)

There's a second definition I could buy which is your
played-at-such-a-level-of-mastery however that's still more
entertainment to me. For example the Globetrotters or Cirque Du
Soleil. Neat, but I'm not sure it's art.
