Rarely, in my experience, is labor ever a commodity. In fact I've never seen
it.

Then all the effort by many business to developing assembly type work for the
explicit purpose of making jobs a commodity are barking up a non-existent tree?
Trust me, being a McDonald's cook is a commodity. They don't WANT an
experienced/educated person, they would leave too soon for that better job you
keep indicating is in endless supply.

When I was a victim of the dot-com bust and had been laid off from my three
month old IT job, I was turned down for any position at McDonalds. I was
over-educated for an entry level position and managers where only hired
internally at that point (I have a culinary degree and experience as well as my
IT experience). So trust me, getting a job even if you are willing to take any
job anywhere is not always as simple as "getting on the internet."
