FWIW, for me, hiking implies short trips without too much gear.
Backpacking implies long trips, overnighters combined with camping
out, with all your gear.

I use iodine tablets and then a filter (which removes the iodine taste).

The two things to look for (for me) is the ability to attach it to a
bottle/bag (if you get a filter with just a tube out, it tends to fall
out of the bottle as you pump, which wastes water and energy.) and the
ability to field clean it for longer trips.

I have a couple of the MSR filters, and have been happy with them.

If you are hiking outside the US, or hiking downstream from known
population centers, go with the purifier/filters rather than the
simple filters.
