The problem with the UN is we (universal we, all members, especially the US and then UK) don't let it work. The UK and US use it to serve their own desires, and we baby it.
The UN is like a little kid. If you keep tying his shoe for him he'll never learn to tie his shoe on his own. For 80 years we have had the League of Nations, then United Nations. What have they done for stopping war? Stopping euthanasia, ethnic cleansing, etc.. Nothing. The next time group A takes to slaughtering group B, the US and the UK needs to stay out of it. Let the UN make the decisions on what to do, when, with who etc... We need to stand up and say our piece but that is it, forget going it alone, forget spearheading any efforts. Let the UN do it collectively with the US and the UK playing an equal role as everyone else. Odds are they (the UN) will fail and thousands maybe 100's of thousands will needlessly die. Sorry, hate to see it happen but that's life. The time after that the UN will probably fail to make a timely decision as well. Again, the US and UK need to stay out of it and let the UN make the decisions. Again many will probably die. Hopefully the time after that the members will see past their differences and see the need to make timely decisions to protect the innocent people being slaughtered. It's a cold way of looking at it, but how different is it from what happens now? What did the UN do for Cambodia during Polpot?, what are they doing in Dafor, what about Timur? If not for the US and UK what would have happened in Bosnia and that whole region? Make the UN make the hard decisions. A few failures are no worse than what has happened time and time again for the past 80 years.
