I'm no engineer... but I'm guessing that major highways, such as the 
transcanada are boring and through flat areas... because it makes a lot more 
sense to build them there.  A lot easier than cutting into valleys or 
mountains... and then, who wants to build anything of interest right against a 
major highway?
