I'm torn about things like this... on one hand I don't mind sooooo much when a story is changed outright for the screen IF the emotional and intellectual concepts are maintained with some degree of respect for the original source material. It would be nice to translate things directly to the screen but this can't always happen. In this case it almost sounds like he may not be trying to convert one of the books but rather to explore some aspects of Earthsea not fully explored in the books. (The whole "war" thing confuses me.) I could see that working very well since the books themselves were very internally focused.
