Paul, any diet change will give the runs, usually.

Imagine if you ate beef every day, every meal, then decided to eat a 
cantaloupe one morning.  You'd probably have a hard time with that. 
We'll leave it there.

As far as feeding her people food, I am very much in agreement.  But - 
being a part of the family usually means that a dog will get treats, 
it's inevitable, and my vet suggested carrots and apples.  She even 
suggested dried apples (which we used along with cut-up hot dogs during 
training), since they are easier to keep and easier to "ration".  My dog 
gets no scraps, and the only treats she gets are apples carrots and 
rawhides.  Well, that, and the UPS driver here at the office always has 
a biscuit for her, but I look the other way.  :)

Sorry, Paul, I should have warned you yesterday about the digestion 
thing.  After you posted that you had tried it, I cringed, but said 
nothing, hoping that maybe your dog would be different.
