OK so I'm going all anal-retentive on my mp3's making sure files are
named consistently and tagged properly.

(I should indicate that I don't really have a player of choice
yet...but I'm going back and forth between iTunes and WMP 10 at the
moment).

The 'tagged properly' is kind of an issue. Let's say I have a song
that has 2 artists on it. I don't mean like Simon & Garfunkle. I
mean like on Ray Charles' "Genius Loves Company" disc that has Ray and
Willie Nelson doing "It was a Very Good Year".

In iTunes, you can browse by artist and I'd rather have the song show
up under either Ray Charles -or- Willie Nelson (rather than have an
artist called "Ray Charles and Willie Nelson" in the list, which to me
seems like keeping a comma delimited list in a relational database).

Is there a way to do this?

I've seen that if you separate the artist with a semi-colon, WMP 10
-will- display it properly (both Ray Charles and Willie Nelson show up
separately as artists). I've not confirmed this yet in iTunes). Is
there a 'universal' way to do this? Do mp3 tags even natively support
multiple artists per track?

I have to assume that among this group, there are people who are just
as OCD over this stuff as I am. Anybody? :)
