They did address this somewhat in the "special edition" which featured a (very) extended introduction by Irulan explaining some of the history and whatnot. It was good - well, better - but a lot of people hate it (the narration is presented over paintings depicting the scenes - not exactly riveting). It was a stopgap measure to be sure but it did, at least, explain some things. The main deviations really wouldn't have changed with the length although I'm sure that some of the characterizations would have been markedly improved. The whole idea of the "sonic modules" (or whatever) and the "magical" messianic abilities of Paul (like him making it rain in the end) turned me off. But I still did like the movie.
