A couple of months ago I buy the Motorola E815 cell phone when I switch my cell service back to Verizon from Nextel. I went with the E815 for the Bluetooth capabilities knowing fair well that the OBEX profiles were disabled by Motorola at the request of Verizon. I don't understand this. The purpose of disabling OBEX profiles on MY phone is of NO concern of Verizon. Their only focus is forcing me to use their services to get Media (MP3s mostly, pictures, and some ring tones) on my phone. If Bluetooth allows me to do this via OBEX and does not use their airwaves or resources at all how can they restrict this? Well, I went ahead and hacked the "seem" on my phone enabling all the features that I felt I had a right to enable since I paid for the phone, I own it, and nothing I enabled uses Verizon's resources... AT ALL. So, I have a problem with my bill the other day and call up Verizon. They tell me I need to update my firmware and give me instructions to do so. I attempt to do so and it fails. I am then told to send the phone in or take it to my local shop for "evaluation". I go into Verizon and they take my phone out back and come back a minute later and say "You violated the terms of service agreement and are stealing services". I say... "really? how?". He goes on to tell me that the "seem" and firmware have been modified. I say "and?". He says "that violates the service agreement". I went on to tell him how nothing that was enabled uses Verizon services nor does it affect the phone's ability to function with Verizon's service in any adverse way. He replies "we have reset the seem and firmware to updated factory defaults, please refrain from modifying these in the future". He hands me my phone and calls for the next person in line.
Fuck that! I ask to talk to the manager. The manager comes over and I explain the situation for which I get a very negative response.. "you can't do this.. blah blah blah... you need to buy our Mobile Office Toolkit and cable ($99) if you want to use sync your phone with your contacts, etc". I said "Excuse me... you can't tell me what I can and can not do when using my phone while at the same time NOT using any of your services". He proceeds to tell me that I can be arrested, blah blah and fined blah blah blah. What the hell is this all about? How is me enabling Bluetooth OBEX profiles in order to store files and contacts on my phone any business of Verizon's? How can they control my phone that I own? I don't get it. Needless to say, I am updating my contacts, MP3's, and bare bones Eclipse application onto my phone as I type this.. all via Bluetooth. I went home and hacked the seem again. Has anyone else heard of such crap? Anyone else hack their seem and have some new features to share? :-) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| Message: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=i:5:193430 Archives: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/threads.cfm/5 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=s:5 Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=89.70.5 Donations & Support: http://www.houseoffusion.com/tiny.cfm/54
