In Yellowknife, a fox's diet includes cappuccino to go

A growing fox population with a taste for urban treats is making its
presence known in Yellowknife.

A 15-year-old boy was playing in his front yard Wednesday night in
freezing weather when a fox destroyed his soccer ball and made off
with an iced cappuccino.

The animal did not lunge or act aggressively, but the boy's family,
who've lived in Yellowknife for years, had never seen a fox so bold.

Senior wildlife officer Raymond Bourget says foxes have been breeding
within city limits for years.

He says people inadvertently encourage close encounters by feeding
them or leaving food around.

The local foxes "don't know the wild," he says. "They don't know the
bush. All they know is city life.

"They've learned from their parents how to go and get food from the
garbage," adds Bourget. "They know where to go for handouts, and if
they can't find any of that, then they start taking cats and other
small pets."

Bourget says the last reported fox bite in the territory was in Inuvik
several years ago. He says people should not feed any wildlife.
