I created a "ball-of-the-month" club for my nephew, and sent him a new
sport ball each month.

Soccer, football, rugby,baseball,basketball,aussie rules
football, hockey, volleyball, tennis, etc. Along with the ball was a
8x11 card for each sport that showed the actions of each sport (tennis
raquet hitting, soccer ball kicking, rugby throw, etc). He loved the
variety, he loved watching me act out the sports. At age 6, he still
plays with them and knows the rules for each sport. Not that it helps
him at all, since his only sport is karate.

For a friend's kid, I gave her a set of rubber balls (like playground
balls) in a yellow box in red, green, amber. It looked like a traffic
light, but could be opened and the balls played with.
