I used to know all this, but i've forgotten a lot of it. I think the pope thing was the primary reason for the church schism in the middle ages that separated the church of rome from the other christian denominations.
While catholicism has adopted some mildly different viewpoints from the other sects, and a few differences in ceremonies etc....their core beliefs are still almost identical to protestant sects.
