I thought evolution avoided explaining origins, just the development since.

Sam

True, but the common layman does not understand this. Also that the kernel of
valid science behind what is currently called "Intelligent Design" does not go
against the theory of evolution. But rather points out a part of the theory we
do not yet have an adequate explanation for the observable facts, that when
reasonable explanations are found will most likely just expand the theory of
evolution, not replace it.

But many people have intentionally or unintentionally through their own
misunderstanding made this into a "them vs. us" political cause; thus mudding
the understanding of the average layperson. IMHO at least.
