Careful Tony, you've just possibly made yourself suspect, saying you trust a foreign national over an American. Very suspicious.
Unfortunately there ls a long history of governments actively suppressing groups because of private beliefs - wanting stuff like equal rights for all, the right to live one's life whereever they want to, despite their skin colour, religion and so on. And using possibly illegal methods to suppress dissent or at the very least use wiretapping etc to keep tabs on their political opponents. its not a far stretch to go from using electronic surveillance to monitor foreigners calling in to americans or vice versa, and using the same methods on political opponents.
