well see, at one point the priest would have been the only person in the 
village who could read the bible. So (imho and apologies to anyone still 
practicing)
the Church taught a a few things that were mighty convenient. But to answer 
your question in terms of dogma, it is a question of worthiness, I think. And 
also, if you have a patron saint, they would be more concerned with you than 
the God of the entire universe.
