I'm sure it's annoying, but it's even more annoying to escorted from the 
building on the spot, which is, I hear, what a lot of employers do. 

I personally would not give them any indication of the problem until I was 
prepared to be replaced. I have heard too many horror stories about people 
being fired for expressing some dissatisfaction. If they offer him the 
telecommute, he can always turn down his other job offer if he likes.
