You should check Boston's First Night. The "Grand Procession" is a large Mardi Gras style parade which caps off the daytime programming and ends with fireworks on the common. And the whole event is alcohol free. ;^) Of course it doesn't happen on Fat Tuesday but rather on December 31st... so it's also colder than a witch's teat.
