Nope - it was a competitor complaining that Barnum's exhibit of the Cardiff Giant was fake while his (equally faked) exhibit was real. He never considered himself to have lied - he merely "dressed up the truth" to make it more entertaining. He might draw in the crowds with humbug but he insisted that they go home satisfied.
