It's my understanding that none of these statements are actually true
however.

The calls were not only from "known terrorists" - at best only suspected
terrorists and in some cases not even that. Apparently data-mining
applications of questionable resource were implemented to determine who to
tap.

The calls were not "from Al Qaeda" simply because there's no way to know
that at this end - you have to be tapping the line in advance to know who's
calling. Also Al Qaeda is far from the only terrorist organization that's
being watched.

I'm not sure that all the calls were overseas although they may be... I
could have sworn that many of the cases were suspected individuals within
the US. In any case the administration hasn't (to my knowledge at least -
and I may be wrong of course) released any sort of documentation on the taps
made or the criteria for making them this statement is suspect at best.

In other words if the taps happened to be only on overseas calls there
doesn't seem to be any evidence that the administration was limiting itself
to that criteria. You might say that all the calls were made to people with
brown eyes and possibly be correct but that doesn't make it a criteria for
selection.
