The children's books is an awesome idea.

A few of the things we used to ask for were big bags of candy and pens. We
would hand them out to the kids, and just get mobbed. I mean who would have
thought that a pen is such a big deal, I'm not sure if it's like this in
Iraq, but in Afghanistan they still use this ink to write everything with
sticks and fountain pens. Pens are very rare, that candy would probably go
over really well.

With the wipes I would go for a mix. The small packs are nice to bring out
on patrols and the bigger boxes are good for the hooch, we used them to
clean everything including dishes and stuff.

With coffee, big cans. Doesn't even have to be good, you just couldn't buy
coffee in AFFES when I was over there. However you could buy a coffee
maker. Explain that :) Now if you want to make him really popular throw in
a couple of logs of mixed dip. Cope, Cope long cut, and Kodiak are what I
would recommend. Even if your friend doesn't dip, it's like smokes in
prison, he can trade/give that shit away easy.

It sounds like you have the books pretty well covered. I know if it weren't
for my wife and mother sending me a constant stream of new books I would
have went nuts. The nice thing about that is if he wants he can leave the
books and stuff there (or even sell them) before he comes home. Help out
the future Soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines that are coming in after
him.

Excellent. I knew you could get me pointed in the right direction.

So:

DVDs. I've been hustling family and friends for used discs, and have about
100. Everything from new movies to old westerns. And the full set of Monty
Python's Flying Circus discs.

Wipes. Should these be the individual foil wraps, or the big plastic
resealable containers, or a mix? Just personal hygene wipes and not cleaning
wipes, right?

Coffee. Instant coffee? Cans of Maxwell house? Should I throw in a bag of
good stuff?

Games. I'll hustle up some older games (Xbox, Playstation). I've got about
30 that can go right now. Are FPS games acceptable, or do they have enough
of that already?

Books. I'll thrown in some paperbacks. Sci-fi/fantasy and westerns.
And whatever dups I have of some smarter books (Federalist Papers, Celestine
Prophesy, Holy Blood and Holy Grail, The Tipping Point, etc) and maybe a
couple books on drawing anime (talk about a time killer).

Finally, although I didn't mention it, I am also including some children's
books:

Needless to say, this is a huge > morale builder, keeping the family in
touch with their loved one in combat.

Thanks for the advice.
