For me, yeah.

The current one IS simple, but so is your idea.

The design of the current site does not get in the way of the message.
There is TOO MUCH information on the new one. I don't know where to
look. The text is too small, the picture is too small. You lost the
"punch".

The current colors are soothing. Take this for what it is worth, but
the colors remind me of grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup (my
ABSOLUTE favorite comfort food). And chilli powder. The southwest and
adobe. All good things in my mind.

The new colors are too cold. All that blue. And the white gutters. the
shapes are abstract and sharp and feel like my first few tries at
stained glass (which did NOT go well). The top banner looks like
pixelation, which feels cold and technical (I would LOVE it as a real
textured wallpaper in my bathroom, though). The masthead is difficult
to read, the white does not pop against that moving background. This
disturbs me more than anything else. The gold gradation on the left
feels like a powerpoint bullet set. The 3 boxes in the main area have
bad gradations too, and with the cloud at the top of each box, looks
like a weather box included from a bad weather site. (I know they are
supposed to be hats, but they look like clouds among all that blue).

Besides that, it is great. (You DID ask).
