I like the first one as well. It was easier on the eyes and made me want to look around more than the other.
What do you ask them when you show it to them? I've found "Do you like it?" to be not so useful. Sometimes, I show somebody the site and then take it away and ask them questions about it to see if it made any impression. ie.
