I think there's some research out there about how the body metabolizes high
fructose corn syrup - the main ingredient in most soda - and how the body is
want to store it as fat. But, I haven't confirmed it.

I think part of the issue, really is that we raise our kids now to expect
all things to be sweet. When they're thirsty, they're given juice or soda.
How many little kids do you see walking around with sippy cups of water? I
think they're probably the exception to the norm.

The other day I was in the grocery store. There we were with our cart full
of fruits/veggies/whole grains/organics and in front of us was an overweight
mom with her obese child (who was maybe 9). He's standing there with a
family size bag of gummy worms, happily slurping them down one after the
other. I felt so bad for the kid - it's not his fault that he has a parent
that thinks that's acceptable nutrition. But, it will be his life-long
weight struggle, no doubt, because his young body is acclimated to eating
junk.
