I'm not seeing things get better.  So I heard and read a lot about a
Iraq in the last few days and you are right (from what I can see) that
the US forces are pulling back in local response in favor of Iraqi
forces, and shifting their efforts to the bigger stuff like insurgent
supply lines.

However, therein lies the problem: when people are killed and the US
is not there to respond, the average Iraqi seems to be asking, "so why
is the US here then?"

To further complicate things, the civil war is heating up.  If the US
attacks Sunnis who are attacking Shiites, then the US is seen to be
siding with the Shiites.  And the opposite is true as well.  To make
things worse, this is also true of the Iraqi police force!

So while the US may be pulling back from daily response, that doesn't
seem connected to the state of peace in Iraq.  Things seem to be
getting worse.

Whether that could've been prevented with a more coherent Iraq policy
post-invasion is unknown, but things are not going well ...
