Don't give up on it by any means.

I do really like the "softer" feel, the rounded corners, etc. The
sharp, boxy, text based technical websites are somewhat offputting to
non-techs. It is a great approach. The colors are just a little too
soft for me, even given the goal.

When evaluating tech companies, I advise my clients to validate the
webpage for HTML and CSS, to see if they follow standards. I tell them
to figure out when the home page was last changed (should be recent),
and when the contact us page was last changed (should not be recent).
I tell them to weigh the homepage, to see what the total file size is.
I tell them to turn off images, and see what they get.

When evaluating designers, I advise my clients to go to their website,
and look at the design. I tell them to calculate the percentage of
image to text. I then tell them to check the filesize of each major
image, to see if any are over 10K or so in size. I tell them to check
to see if computer generated images with flat areas of the same color
are GIFs, and if larger, complex photos are JPGs. I often also then
download a few images, and resave them myself, seeing what the
filesize difference is between what they have and what I can get. Also
look at their business cards and marketing collateral, and see if they
are effective.

Will your site be rated "good" or "move along" by my clients?
