Speaking of K Mart, I heard a rumor today that Sears is about to layoff 5,000 people. Bad time to work in retail.
Which brings up a totally unrelated subject -- I just bought a brand new refrigerator from sears.com. And I got the worst customer service. When ordering, there was a question about which side the door should open on, but it's not clearly worded. I made the wrong selection. The refrigerator was delivered today. I called sears.com to have them fix it, and they stonewalled me. "It's perfectly clear, sir. You made the wrong selection. If you want it changed, there will be a fee, or we can come and pick up the refrigerator." My position was that I'm an intelligent, college educated guy and if I'm confused, then it isn't worded clearly. Also, the delivery guy said he has to deal with this kind of confusion all of the time on Internet orders. Still, even the general manager of sears.com would do nothing to alleviate the situation. I did do some yelling (but no cussing -- so Judith, my little lecture about how it's good to be a "wuss" sometimes went out the window). I'm like, "Look, there's only two ways to look at this, either sears.com is wrong or I'm stupid -- which is it?" At this point, the GM said, "Can you hold, sir." I was then on hold for two or three minutes before they hung up the phone on me. The issue was resolved to my satisfaction, I must point out. I talked to the operations manager of the local Sears store -- in person, not on the phone. I did remain calm. And he got a repair guy to our house today and fixed the refrigerator for free. When I get bad customer service from a Web site, it really makes me despair about the future of our industry. H. -----Original Message----- From: Erika L.
