I agree, but since funding is in short supply, I think it should be
directed in proportion to the general support of the science by other
scientists and the potential usefulness of the science and the
groundbreakingness of the science.

I should not get as much funding to research using diamonds and rubies
as aggregate in concrete, as, say, someone who can turn sand into
gasoline.
